Residential Waste & Recycling Services
Stowe Township partners with Valley Waste Service to provide reliable residential trash and recycling collection. Collection schedules vary throughout the township, so residents should refer to their service information or contact Valley Waste Service for pickup schedules, service questions, missed collections, or account assistance. Valley Waste also offers convenient online account management and payment options. Valley Waste provides weekly residential trash collection and single-stream recycling in Stowe Township.

How holidays affect pickup.
When a holiday falls on or before Wednesday, pickup is delayed by one day. Holidays later in the week don't affect the schedule.

Things people ask the township.
Don’t see your question? Call the township office at (412) 331-4050 or use Report a Concern to send a note.
What time should I set my cans out?
Cans should be at the curb by 6:00 AM on Wednesday. Crews start at 7:00 AM and may run as late as 3:00 PM depending on the route. Cans set out the night before should be tightly closed.
Cans must be removed from the curb by 9:00 PM the day of pickup, per township ordinance.
My pickup was missed — what do I do?
If your trash or recycling was missed, call the township office at (412) 331-4050 or submit a missed-pickup report online. We forward the report to Waste Management; in most cases they return within 24 business hours.
If the issue is with how the truck handled your cans (damage, spilling, etc.), call us so we can document it.
Can I get extra recycling bins?
Yes. Stop by the township office during business hours and we’ll provide a recycling bin at no charge. There’s no limit on how many recycling containers you can put out, as long as each is under 32 gallons and weighs less than 50 pounds.
How do I dispose of a refrigerator or appliance?
Appliances are accepted at bulk pickup (last Wednesday of the month). Refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners must have a tag from a licensed technician confirming Freon has been removed. Without the tag, the unit will not be picked up.
Where can I take electronics, paint, or hazardous waste?
None of these items are accepted at curbside collection. Allegheny County runs Household Hazardous Waste collection events twice a year (typically March and September) at the County Public Works yard. Best Buy accepts most consumer electronics; PaintCare partner retailers accept latex and oil-based paint.
The township will post upcoming county HHW events on the News page as dates are announced.
What about Christmas trees?
Live trees (no decorations, no plastic bags, no flocking) are collected the first two Wednesdays of January as part of regular trash pickup. After January, they go to bulk pickup.
Do I need a sticker or to register for trash service?
No. Residential trash service is included as part of your township taxes — you don’t pay the hauler directly. Just put your cans out on Wednesday morning.
